Be an NWABR essay contest judge!

Posted: January 2, 2013 in Events, Science Communication, Science Outreach

Hi All! Sorry for the lack of posts, but as I’m sure many of you have been doing, I’ve been spending some quality time with the extended family over this holiday season.

While we celebrate the beginning of the New Year, I wanted to altert everyone to a new volunteer opportunity with the Northwest Association for Biomedical Research (NWABR)! I participated as a judge in last year’s “Biomedical Breakthroughs and My Life” essay contest and had a great time. Its amazing what these 7th and 8th graders write!

From their website:

NWABR’s popular middle school essay contest is taking place again this year and we could use your help!  We expect over 200 middle school students to participate in our “Biomedical Breakthroughs and My Life” essay contest and we invite you to be a judge.

7th and 8th grade students write about the development of medications or medical devices used by themselves or relatives.  Judges will be needed for two rounds of judging.  You receive ~6 essays electronically and can read and provide comments (electronically) at your convenience over 7 days.  We will provide you with judging criteria. You may participate in one or two rounds.

Wed., March 13 – Tues., March 19          1st round of judging

Mon., March 25 – Mon., April 1              2nd round of judging

To register online to be a judge, go directly to the registration form at

https://www.nwabr.org/civicrm/event/info?id=33&reset=1

We hope you will encourage your colleagues to join you as a judge.

If you register to be a judge, you will be contacted in late February to indicate for which rounds of judging you are available and whether you have a preference for judging in the “general” or “English Language Learner” categories.

For more information about the contest and to read last year’s winning essays, visit http://www.nwabr.org/students/essay-contest.

If you are interested in other science outreach events in the community, see the volunteer opportunities posted by NWABR at http://www.nwabr.org/community/volunteer-opportunities.  You are invited to complete the online “volunteer” registration form to get monthly notices about upcoming volunteer opportunities.

Please contact me if you have any questions.

I look forward to having you as a judge!

Reitha
